Dr. Veyrac supports sport horse performance through a global and systemic approach to veterinary medicine: osteopathy.
The sport horse is an athlete whose mental, emotional, and physical capacities are highly challenged by training and competition.
Repeated exertion may lead to fatigue, muscular tension, and restrictions in joint mobility that can negatively affect performance levels.
Osteopathy is a manual therapy that acts on the body’s structural system as a whole. It contributes to postural balance, movement quality, and relaxation, three key factors in athletic development.
Integrated into conventional veterinary care, it forms part of the horse's medical follow-up, helping to preserve optimal functional health.
In sport horse veterinary medicine, a global and systemic approach consists of evaluating the animal as a whole rather than focusing primarily on an isolated clinical sign. It is based on the analysis of interactions between the various body systems, as well as on behavioural and environmental factors. This approach enables the identification and management of the underlying causes of a syndrome.
In sport horses, this approach is particularly indicated in complex cases such as poor performance, behavioural changes, exercise intolerance, locomotor asymmetries, or chronic pain. It is especially relevant when multiple clinical signs are present without a clearly identifiable underlying cause.
Conventional veterinary medicine is primarily based on a symptomatic approach, relying on the assessment of observable clinical signs. It is supported by standardised scientific protocols and the use of complementary diagnostic tools to establish accurate diagnoses and provide targeted treatments. The global and systemic approach extends this framework by offering a broader interpretation of the clinical picture, considering the animal as a functional unit beyond the isolated expression of clinical signs. Together, these two approaches ensure a rigorous and comprehensive management of the sport horse.
Osteopathy is based on the principle that the integrity of body structures determines the quality of function, a principle aligned with the global and systemic approach in veterinary medicine. Through manual therapy, it enables an integrative conception of the animal. It thereby contributes to viewing the sport horse as a coherent and functional whole, supporting optimal training conditions and athletic performance.
